Spectrum Announces Digital Education Grant

SPECTRUM ANNOUNCES $37,000 SPECTRUM DIGITAL EDUCATION GRANT FOR
BUILDING SKILLS PARTNERSHIP

Building Skills Partnership Helps Reduce the Digital Divide

Spectrum recently announced Building Skills Partnership has received a $37,000 Spectrum Digital Education grant for their Digital Device Lending program, as part of its five-year, $7 million commitment to digital education in Spectrum communities across the country.

Building Skills Partnership (BSP) will use the funding to leverage its partnerships and strengthen its new distance learning model in order to reduce the digital divide in low-income immigrant worker communities. In the long-term, this project will help BSP remove barriers to workforce development training and support services, create opportunities for career advancement, and mitigate future crises that can result in disruption of in-person services.

“We are grateful to Spectrum for continuing to support our digital inclusion work in underserved communities in Los Angeles,” said Luis Sandoval, Executive Director of Building Skills Partnership. “It is partnerships like ours with Spectrum that will help all people get connected regardless of their income or zip code.”

Spectrum presented the $37,000 grant to the organization on March 26 at a family resource fair in Los Angeles. Assemblymember Miguel Santiago and Councilmember Curren Price and Spectrum executives participated in the celebration.

Building Skills Partnership is a California statewide nonprofit whose mission is to improve the quality of life for low-wage property service workers and their families by increasing their skills, access to education, and opportunities for career and community advancement.

“We applaud Building Skills Partnership for their broadband education initiatives and for helping us support efforts that promote digital literacy in the Los Angeles community,” said Rahman Khan, Vice President of Community Impact for Charter Communications, Inc., which operates the Spectrum brand of broadband connectivity products. “Through this partnership with Building Skills Partnership, the Spectrum Digital Education program is able to bring essential resources to those in need, and we look forward to working with them on this transformative project.”

“Congratulations to Building Skills Partnership on being awarded a Spectrum Digital Education Grant in support of their Digital Device Lending program,” said Assemblymember Miguel Santiago. “The disparities in knowledge and ability of using digital and information technology among individuals with different demographics, socioeconomic backgrounds, and digital and information technology competencies magnifies the need for comprehensive digital literacy programs. Thank you Spectrum for valuing digital equity and supporting organizations like the Building Skills Partnership who help address the needs of the immigrant worker community.”

Building Skills Partnership is one of 49 nonprofit organizations that Spectrum is supporting through 2021 Spectrum Digital Education grants. Since launching Spectrum Digital Education in 2017, Spectrum has donated $7 million in cash and in-kind contributions for digital literacy programs reaching nearly 70,000 people in 20 states and Washington, D.C. Charter sponsors several philanthropic programs in addition to Spectrum Digital Education, including Spectrum Scholars, a scholarship for under-represented college juniors in financial need; Spectrum Employee Community Grants, which supports Charter employees’ local volunteer activities; and the Spectrum Community Investment Loan Fund, which supports small and minority-owned businesses whose goods and services help meet core needs in financially underserved communities within the company’s footprint.
