LPL and Allied Universal porters in San Diego
Building Skills Partnership has proudly partnered with LPL Financial and Allied Universal for a number of years.
As a leading industry partner, LPL Financial has overseen Building Skills Partnership programs for Allied Universal workers at a La Jolla, San Diego site that is a LEED Platinum building since 2017.
The collaboration has brought forth BSP’s English as a Second Language, Infectious Disease Certification and Green Janitor Education Program to several hundreds of workers.
“I have full trust in the Building Skills Partnership team,” says Michael Smith, Services Manager for the Jorgensen FM Building, which is a service provider to LPL Financial.
“BSP programs give [our] property service workers a sense of pride, accomplishment, and the valuable knowledge that they need to keep our buildings and business communities that we serve safe,” Smith continues.
Michael Smith himself, is a LEED Green Associate and takes pride in BSP’s Green Janitor Education programs (GJEP), through which janitors are accredited in green building cleaning practices to help meet the latest energy, water, and environmental sustainability standards. A USBGC accredited program, the GJEP curriculum addresses energy efficiency, recycling, waste management, water conservation and other sustainable and green cleaning practices.

He views GJEP programs as a benefit to the building communities served, because the day and night porters become specialists in these areas of green cleaning.
“My team even had polo shirts made with ‘Certified Disinfection Specialist’ on the front, to signify the workers that have completed BSP’s GJEP curriculum. –This type of shirt signifies an extra bit of knowledge for the porters that have earned the GJEP standards”, says Smith.
He has also experienced positive changes that transform workers through BSP programs, saying: “porters have pride and confidence, and they are proud of the work they do. Through BSP’s English as a Second Language courses, workers better communicate with their employers and the building community. Through the Infectious Disease Certification programs, porters know what it takes to keep the building community safe with cleaning standards that have become even more important during the pandemic.”
