Celebrating Women’s History Month

This Women’s History Month, about 25 members gathered for a powerful LA Cafecitos discussion to reflect on the contributions of women in their lives, their workplaces, and society. The conversation was filled with personal stories, recognition of women's leadership in the janitorial industry, and deep reflections on the ongoing fight for gender equality.

Women in the Workplace & Leadership

A key theme of the discussion was the role of women in leadership, especially within the janitorial industry, where women make up the majority of workers. Participants recognized the strong female leaders in the labor movement, including individuals who have paved the way for better rights and opportunities.

One participant noted that women in this industry show greater dedication than men. Another expressed pride in Mexico’s first female president, seeing it as a sign of progress. Many echoed the need for more female representation in leadership, with one participant emphasizing Mexico as an example of how women continue to break barriers.

One person spoke about passing down knowledge from her mother and grandmother to her six daughters. Another shared that she was raised by both of her grandmothers, who instilled different values and virtues in her upbringing. Someone else credited her father for raising her to be strong and hardworking after immigrating at 17.  hardworking after immigrating at 17.

Reflecting on Women’s History

The group watched a Women’s History Month video, sparking discussions on global progress in women’s rights. Participants reflected on milestones such as the right to vote, workplace inclusion, and the evolving role of women in politics and society. One participant commented that women are often more honest in politics, while others acknowledged the need for shared responsibilities in households and workplaces.

A Call for Continued Change

Throughout the discussion, members voiced a shared commitment to continuing the fight for gender equality:

  • Recognizing the value of women’s contributions at home and at work

  • Fighting for equal opportunities and representation in leadership

  • Empowering the next generation of women to lead and advocate for change

As one individual shared, the progress women have made in the workplace and labor rights is thanks to strong women raising their voices. Their efforts have led to greater protections, opportunities, and respect.

Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate these victories but also to recognize the work still ahead. As one participant put it, “Women are in their chapter of life where they can do anything they set their minds to.”

Looking Ahead

This discussion was a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and leadership of women in our communities. By continuing to support and uplift women, we can ensure a future where equality is not just an ideal, but a reality
