Mental Health for Our Workers
BSP is happy to provide culturally and linguistically competent health and wellness education, including mental health courses for property service workers from low-wage industries and their families throughout California.
In September of 2023 alone, BSP trained over 20 workers in our mental health curriculum. Participants reflected on how everyday worries affect their health, interactions with family, and even concentration at work.
Their shared collective experience of COVID-19 encouraged many of them to confess their fears and anxieties.
“Sometimes I feel very disconnected from life and I feel like running away. Having to deal with a child with special needs, a physically demanding job and other worries from the past are not so easy,” said Irma, a property service worker and BSP participant in LA.
“BSP classes have provided me with coping mechanisms and tools to deal with my mental health. When I feel a panic attack, I remember Angel [BSP Health Educator] telling me to ‘relax’ and to ‘take deep breaths’. Sometimes we just want someone to listen to us and I am happy that my voice was heard during a time I needed the most.”
BSP’s Health and Wellness programs statewide educate participants on health literacy and offers health prevention information, ranging from diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, to stress management and mental health, with curriculum aimed at addressing the most pressing health concerns of workers and their families.
BSP health programs integrate a culturally relevant curriculum encompassing food selection and proper nutrition materials, helping workers and their families overcome barriers to healthy food options and education. BSP also hosts planned physical activities, such as group hikes, to promote the importance of exercise.
