A Journey to U.S. Citizenship with BSP

Silvia Martinez along with Joel Gutierrez Financial Capabilities Coordinator and Cecilia Guerra Rios Community Advancement Coordinator - Palo Alto

Silvia Martinez, a proud SEIU-USWW member from Palo Alto, has spent the past seven years embracing every opportunity to grow and learn through Building Skills Partnership (BSP) programs. Her inspiring journey is a testament to perseverance, community, and the power of education.

Silvia’s path to citizenship wasn’t easy. For over a year and a half, she dedicated herself to attending BSP’s online English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and citizenship courses. Despite initial feelings of insecurity and self-doubt about memorizing the curriculum, Silvia never gave up. Her determination, combined with unwavering support from BSP instructors and coordinators, kept her pushing forward.

BSP provided Silvia with vital resources to help her succeed. From educational materials like books and flashcards to access to computers, every tool played a role in her preparation for the naturalization exam. Most importantly, Silvia found motivation and encouragement in the dedicated teachers who guided her every step of the way.

"Thanks to the support I received from the BSP teachers and coordinators, I was motivated to submit my N-400 application and attend the citizenship interview, which I passed!" Silvia shared proudly.

This year, Silvia achieved her dream of becoming a U.S. citizen — a milestone made even more special by the presence of the BSP Bay Area team at her naturalization ceremony. The event marked not only the end of a challenging journey but also the start of a new chapter filled with promise and possibility.

BSP is honored to have played a part in Silvia’s success and celebrates her remarkable achievement. Her story serves as a beacon of hope for others seeking to navigate the path to citizenship and beyond.

Congratulations, Silvia — your hard work and perseverance inspire us all!

A sincere thank you to Google and Sobrato Philanthropies for making these impactful programs possible.
