On Thursday November 10th, 2022 at La Plaza de Cultura y Artes in Downtown Los Angeles, Building Skills Partnership hosted the 2022 Mike Garcia Scholarship gala. The event focused on raising funds to provide financial support to the children of property service workers throughout California to obtain a higher education.

Mike Garcia served as the president of SEIU-USWW between 1988 and 2014 where he led 40,000 janitors, security officers, and airport workers in the Justice for Janitors campaign; a movement that helped workers achieve a more just way of living and working. The Mike Garcia Scholarship continues his legacy.

Since 2008, with the donations from individuals, partners, employers, labor and SEIU-USWW, Building Skills Partnership has provided over $350,000 in scholarships to students. 2022 commemorates the organization’s 15th year of programs, serving property service workers from low-wage industries throughout California. With approximately 150 individuals in attendance, BSP met and exceeded our goal of $75,000 raised to provide the children of property service workers scholarships in 2023. View event photos!
